This company has sustained for more than 100 years and with every success, there is always a story behind it that we all can learn.

Background of Rolex

Rolex was founded by a man named Hans Eberhard Wilhelm Wilsdolf and he was born in Germany in the year 1881. His family was all about business in which his father was running a hardware store. Wilsdolf was supposed to inherit his father's business but that just did not happen.

Unfortunately for him, the death of both his parents happened when he was at a young age. His relatives, on the other hand, decided to sell Wilsdolf's father's business and the money was invested into the Wilsdolf trust.

Wilsdolf was later sent to a boarding school to further his studies. After he finished his studies he emigrated to Geneva, Switzerland, and started his career at a company that distributes pearls. This is where he started to learn about international trade.

Start as a Translator

Not many seem to know about how it all started and Wilsdolf later decided that he would quit his job to work for a company that exports watches, Cuno, Korten. Since he did not have any job experience handling watches, he was instead assigned to be a translator.

He definitely learns a lot when he was in this company and later in 1903, Wilsdolf moved to London to start up his own business to make watches with the help of his friend Alfred James Davis which happens to be his brother in law.

The Birth of Rolex 1908

This was the particular year when history had been made for Wilsdolf and in that era, a lot of guys will own pocket watches. Wilsdolf sees this as an opportunity to try and promote his product and in the year 1908, the brand Rolex was registered as a trademark. He continued to produce unique and new design watches.

Not just that, but Rolex was also the first watch to received recognition by the marine chronometer for being durable and precise. On top of that, Rolex was also the first watch to be made waterproof as well as airtight.
